Practice scene analysis: General Ne Win’s suspicions and control

1) Scene 1: First impressions of General Ne Win:

Shifty:

doesn’t make eye contact, talks quietly, seemingly nervous, touching his face.

What is he doing when he is first introduced?

talking about Anng Sang Suu Kyi, 

What do you see? (visual techniques)

guards wearing red bandanas. represents communism, seen previous in the movie where the coup was taking place, the overthrowing intruders wear a red bandana over their face. Another time previous a red bandana wearing guards says, “I wear the red bandana, I have the right to kill you”. The general Ni Win wears the military green, along with many medals and decorations, implying that he is very high up in the military, opposed to the man he is talking to, who wears just a plain shirt, implying that he works undercover, to provide the general with underground information on his own country.

What do you hear? (verbal techniques)

Both talk very quietly as if they don’t want anyone to overhear, they never talk about Anng Sung Suu Kyi, he never mentions her by name, always referring to her as “She”

2) Scene 2: Visiting a tarot card reader

What is General Ne Win doing in this scene?

Describe the environment Ne Win is in? (Consider Luc Besson’s auteur style)

The General is in a shady, Backstreet, seedy part of the city.

What is the tarot card reader like? What is she doing?

providing the superstitious leader of a nation with information of how he should run his country.

What do you see? (visual techniques)

the contrast on the generals car and the poor streets in the city, showing the difference in wealth and the misuse of spendings of the country.  he arrives too so the soothsayer, she resides in a dark room, down a creepy hallway. he is seeing her in a shady, seedy, secretive back part of town. He is doing this for this woman to provide him with guidance to running the nation. he seems to lose a sense of power, he respects the woman in the room, when she tells him to remove his shoes and he obeys, while in this room, she has the power not him.  the close ups early in this scene focus on the general, him taking off his shoes and hat with respect to the tarot card reader. Behind the general, Ne Win is a green and red background, possibly representing military and communism. The scene starts with some medium shots, to show not just the conversation but the body language in it. The fact that the general of the entire nation is visiting a tarot card reader to advise him on how to run his country

1) Scene 1: General Ne Win hands Aung San Suu Kyi over to his military commander:

What is taking place in the opening of this scene? What are General Ne Win’s concerns?

the scene begins with an over the shoulder shot, from the perspective of Ni Win, looking at a close-up shot of Anng Sung. As he draws the card he looks between the two generals

2) Scene 2: Cutting off Aung San Suu Kyi from the world

What is happening in this scene?

Barriers and barbed wire being put up around Anng Sung Suu Kyi’s house. Soldiers surround the house. all of Anng Sung Suu Kyi’s followers, from both inside her house to all around the city are rounded up and sent off. Her political party is effectively disbanded. the military uses fear, power, and force over those beneath them.

Describe the action/activity that is taking place?

the disbanding of Anng Sung’s political party by the military

What is Aung San Suu Kyi’s reaction to the military control?

calm and collected, in contrast to the military which is rushing around with urgency and disorganization

What do you see? (visual techniques)

the scene starts out with many mid shots shows the soldier putting down barricades, an over the shoulder shot shows the view of the assembled national league for democracy from the perspective of the soldiers. the scene shows a medium wide shot, showing the frantic guards, and the huge resources being poured into the confinement. a huge amount of weapons and guards, trucks and jeeps

What do you hear? (verbal techniques)

The scene begins with building music, the diegetic shouts of the soldiers, the music calm when showing the view of Anng Sang, waking her boys and telling them of the news of the soldiers surrounding the building. a sudden snap is heard as the soldiers open the doors, the music transitions to ominous music, as the soldiers, storm the buildings were Anng Sung’s followers are the music increases in volume. the speed increases throughout the scene until the phone line of Anng Sung’s phone line is cut, then it stops completely
